She closes the little door very slowly. Then she sits on the floor. The key is beside her. She looks at the key. She looks at the door. She looks at the table.

“I do not know what to do,” she says.

Alice is crying

Soon one big tear falls onto the floor. Then another tear falls. Then another. Alice is crying. She wants to stop, but she cannot. More tears are falling. They are making a little pool on the floor. The pool is becoming bigger and bigger.

Alice looks at the water. “My tears are everywhere,” she says. The water is coming closer to her feet. Then it is coming closer to her legs. Soon there is water all around her. Alice looks at the room. Everything looks different now.

Then something strange happens again. Alice looks at her hands. “They are becoming small,” she says. She looks at her feet. “They are becoming small too.”

Alice is becoming smaller and smaller. The table is growing taller. The little key is on the table again. The little door is far away again.

“Oh no!” Alice says. Soon she is very small. Now the pool is very big. Alice is in the water. She cannot stand. She is swimming. “I can swim,” she says. “That is good.”

The water is cold, but Alice is swimming slowly. She is looking around the room. The glass table is high above her. The little door is far away. The beautiful garden is behind the little door.

Then Alice hears a small sound.

Splash…

Splash…

She turns her head.

“There is somebody in the water,” she says. A Mouse is swimming near her. The Mouse is wet. It is swimming very slowly.

“Hello!” Alice says. “Please do not go away. I am alone.”

The Mouse looks at Alice, but it does not answer. It is swimming away. Alice is swimming after the Mouse.

“I do not want to hurt you,” she says. “I only want to talk.” The Mouse looks at Alice again. Now it is swimming more slowly.

Soon Alice can see more animals. A Duck is swimming in the pool. A Dodo is swimming behind the Duck. Two little birds are flying low over the water because their wings are wet. All the animals are looking for dry ground.

Alice smiles. “We are all in the same pool,” she says. She looks across the water. “There!” she says. “There is dry ground.” The Mouse is swimming that way. The Duck is following the Mouse. The Dodo is coming behind the Duck. Alice is swimming with them.
